Garden Sage

sage 3

I’ve been working with sage lately, there is so much in the garden! It’s been a good year. I have been drying it for the kitchen and for mini sage smudge sticks. I just love the smell of them! You probably know sage from it’s use in recipes, especially meats like chicken, turkey, and pork. That’s because it is a great digestive aid and a carminative (relives the gases). Well there is so much more to sage than that!! Oh my goodness! Because there is so much sage in my garden I decided to investigate other uses for it. There are many…. I think sage may be one of the top ten herbs it’s so amazing!

As I was reading one of my many books around here on herbs I learned a lot more about this plant. You are familiar with sage as it grows, right? No? well it’s part of the mint family and very aromatic, there’s no mistaking it’s aroma. It’s a perennial, which means it comes back year after year without reseeding. It can grow 2-3 feet tall and has gray/green colored leaves. The leaves are amazing, take a close look at them, they are bumpy, very textured, a little fuzzy. It is the leaves that hold the medicinal and magical powers. The flowers are small and bluish, with purple and white stripes.  Mine grows right in the middle of my garden, next to the nettle. Plenty of sun and water.

You are familiar with sage as a culinary herb, most kitchens around here have it. Great with turkey and in stuffing, pork roasts and baked chicken. There is so much more than that too! As a tea, sage is DEE-ish!! Really, try it! It helps clear brain fog, improves memory and the ability to concentrate. Also, if your nose starts dripping and your throat is acting up…. ugh! a cold…. well, sage tea to the rescue. Sage has an affinity for the nose, throat, and respiratory system! Works wonders when you feel the first tinges of a cold. I love using teas as support for when I’m starting to feel icky.

Menopause, I only mention it because it is coming up before too long for me, I’m no spring chicken here. But sage is a menopausal woman’s friend. Asa cool tea it helps with night sweats and headaches, supports the regulation of hormones and improves circulation (do you feel cold and damp? Sage tea may be what you need).

I mean the list goes on abut the usefulness of sage, that herb in your cabinet, from helping with weaning to helping restore the color to your gray hair. BUT there is even more because sage is amazing!!

Sage is a very important herb spiritually to many cultures and has been used for centuries in ceremonies and magic. I know you have seen the movies where a Native American is fan smoke out of a shell or other sacred vessel and walking around chanting. This is a ceremonial use, the clearing and protection. Sage is also being used to raise the vibration of a person/home/space. It helps you open to higher states of consciousness and spirit communication. It reminds us to remember our roots, and to keep our foundations strong, it also helps open our third eye. Sage encourages wisdom, and connection to intuition. I don’t think it is coincidence that sage refers to an herb, but also means a mystic or wise person! Sage gives clarity of mind, encourages wisdom and intuition, opens your third eye and helps you state grounded, protected and vibrating at a higher level! Seriously!! It is an herbal powerhouse! There is so much more I could write about, but the boys are rolling out of bed and tumbling down the stairs.
